DENVER — Toei Animation Inc. and Fathom Events have announced that the new feature film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna will screen March 25 as a special one-night-only theatrical event across the United States. A 15-minute exclusive pre-show will include interviews with the film’s director, Tomohisa Taguchi and chief animation director, Seiji Tatsukawam that will only be available in theaters
Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna will screen in select U. S. theaters on Wednesday, March 25 at 7:00 p. m. (local time) through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). A complete list of theater locations is available on Fathom Events (theaters and participants are subject to change). Tickets are on sale now and will be available online or at participating theater box offices.
Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna takes place five years after the events of Digimon Adventure tri, the six-part film series released in 2015. Now on the cusp of adulthood, Tai and his DigiDestined friends discover that with age, their bonds with each of their Digimon will ultimately break. How does it end for Tai, Agumon and the others?

I think people are misinterpreting the whole Digimon disappearance drama. A big part of this film is Taichi having trouble deciding what he’s going to do with his life and the movie ends with him vowing to find a way to be with Agumon again. In the 02 ending we see that he’s become an Ambassador between the Real and Digital Worlds. so there you go. This movie’s events are what motivated him to become an ambassador, linking the two worlds together and reuniting everyone with their partners.
This feels like a recreation of the first ova/digimon the movie.

It isn’t often I leave a Japanese cinema with people crying everywhere, with silence as we all marched down towards the exit, and I didn’t think Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna would be an anime film that did that, but here we are. The latest, and last, Digimon Adventure film – of the DigiDestined we’ve grown up with – opened in cinemas in Japan on February 21, and as someone that grew up watching Digimon on Cheez TV every morning in Australia, I was right there, on the first day, to watch it.
Set 5 years after the events of Digimon Adventure tri, the gang has started to grow up and become productive members of society. Taichi and Yamato have beers together at a Japanese bar while discussing what they’re going to do after university, Hikari and Takeru are facing their first year of university, Izumi is a CEO of his own tech business, Mimi is “spreading kawaii” across the world, and Sora is following in the footsteps of her family, and yet DigiDestined work still goes on. Digimon problems are still appearing in the world and the 01 kids are helping protect Tokyo.
I’m afraid if I say anymore, I feel like it’ll come as too much of a spoiler, as this film is great to go in blind with. But, let’s just say the film uses the usual story of adults needing the help of the kids (well, not kids anymore) to save both the world and the Digital World.
Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna is an adult anime film, with adult themes, made for the Millenials who grew up with the franchise. Taichi has an ecchi stash, he and Yamato go drinking, Taichi works in a pachinko parlor. These are adult characters in an adult world, dealing with adult problems, with Digimon stuff on the side. Though, and I doubt I’m alone in thinking this, sometimes I’d be nice to not worry and maybe go back to my childhood and play Digimon World on the original PlayStation, so I can’t blame these guys for not wanting to let go of their childhood.
But LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna isn’t about that: it is about growing up and letting go. For the characters, it’s hard to be a DigiDestined and still have a job – apparently saving the world doesn’t pay well. It’s not about them choosing what to focus on, it’s about them learning how to juggle both responsibilities without cracking. That is until those cracks appear. And not leaving a dry eye in the cinema.
From an animation standpoint, Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna is the perfect update to the animation from the original Digimon Adventure TV series. The pre-credits scene is a fight between Parrotmon in Nakano made me cry from nostalgia, with the help of the new rendition of ‘Brave Heart’ being used for the fight. The animation team at Yumeta Company, under the direction of Tomohisa Taguchi ( Persona4 the Golden ANIMATION, Kino’s Journey – the Beautiful World-) used the past series and films as reference for the Digimon evolutions, key design motifs (like the line-art for the characters inside a server-space, mimicking that of Our War Game), and scenes to envoke that sense of nostalgia, in a good way.
The film even references past background characters to create the sense of a continuing story and the global impact that Digimon have in this fictional world. The film felt like an evolution of the franchise, rather than the drastic overhaul that was Digimon Adventure tri.
As part of the updated animation, key scenes had a new white shadow effect on the characters rather than the usual black, giving off an interesting visual style that is wholly different from the original series or tri. LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna also isn’t afraid to change up the animation style for a cut to give more impact or emotion into a certain scene, for great effect (read: tears).
Each character also felt like an evolution of what we’ve seen in the past. Taichi and Yamato, while bickering, as usual, felt like really good friends bickering, then when they had to, getting on with what needs to be done, rather than child (or teenagers) fighting. Izumi, while being a CEO and head honcho of his own company, was still the Izzy we loved from those scenes in Our War Game. Even the 02 kids (again, adults! ) get their own time to shine in the film, without making them feel like they were just tacked onto it to appease fans. Even the new characters, felt like they grew up in a world where Digimon existed, and have backstories that make you understand their motivations.
It’s safe to say, at least for me, this has been the best Digimon anime creation since the Mamoru Hosoda directed films. Each emotional beat was meticulously well crafted to not just be a great Digimon film, but a great film in general that helps re-introduce the characters to an audience who may have skipped over Digimon Adventure tri.
From the opening scene to the final frame, this anime film was a love letter to the Digimon Adventure franchise, and the perfect, yet depressing as hell, send off to the DigiDestined we’ve known for 20 years. It was nice to say goodbye.
Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna opened in Japanese cinemas on February 21 and will have limited showings in North American and Australia in March. Toei Animation announced on January 21 that the original series will be rebooted for a new age, with the TV anime starting in April 2020.

After being majorly let down by Digimon Tri, the Adventure series seems to have been given one last chance (maybe? And a new remake/spinoff in April? ) to go out with a bang. Though it seems like the Adventure series has and will be milked like a Dairymon (there is surprisingly no cow Digimon to make this joke work) for the time being, this film does actually live up to its title and thankfully concludes with a level finality while also calling back to many of the things that made us fall in love with the franchise all those years ago.

When Digimon originally aired in 1999, it enthralled children with a digital world that followed young and unprepared protagonists. The series grounded itself with themes that discussed teamwork, partnership, and inner strength through a world where creatures and children became companions to fight for the greater good. Next came Digimon Tri, a sequel series that proceeded to leap forward and showcase an aged group of the DigiDestined we love. In general, the idea was a risk that really paid off and proved that we don’t need to be stuck in a moment in time like Pokémon. With time came maturity for the DigiDestined, and now has to lead to Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna — a pivotal (and possible final) chapter for the captivating franchise. Our favorite group of DigiDestined has become adults The decision to age the DigiDestined was one of the best concepts of the franchise, showing us the trials and tribulations that come from being a child savior to some capacity. By the standards of the franchise, they’ve basically peaked and several other young DigiDestined on the rise — but the first two generations are now going through more attainable struggles. Many of the DigiDestined have grown apart in pursuit of careers, happiness, and life in general, something that comes naturally as we’re forced to shift priorities to sustain life. With that includes the occasional rut, with Matt and Tai both feeling almost disconnected from their passions and unknown life path. Toei Animation Some of them have entirely strayed from their youth, as Sora has retired as a DigiDestined and is truthful more scorned than we’ve seen her at any point in life. Growing up seems to be the feared villain of the film with repercussions that feel extremely relatable, and of course, there’s the added pressure of a fading bond with Digimon partners. A bond that refuses to fail The relationship between Digimon and DigiDestined has always been the primary driving force for the franchise, capitalizing on the unique connections time and time again. The most emotionally taxing piece of the film comes from the idea that this bond is now in borrowed time and will soon become severed. In particular, this is mostly focused on Tai and Matt as well as Agumon and Gabumon, which is the biggest tear-jerker the franchise has seen since the death of Wizardmon. A big portion of the film is maturing as discussed earlier, but something that becomes clearer with this film is that the Digimon have watched them go from children to adults. There’s a specific scene where Agumon stares at Tai as he stands tall and comments on how much he’s watched Tai grow in every sense of the word. The notion is a true punch to the gut as the film creates a countdown to the unknown and in a single scene, you can feel how much the franchise has evolved between 1999 and 2020. These relationships are the most integral part of Digimon, and the film introduces something that threatens it entirely — showing us that this title last evolution wasn’t selected by accident. A glimmer of hope Despite the fact that the film is an emotional roller coaster with several highs and lows, there is a sliver of hope for die-hard fans. Without going too in-depth and revealing spoilers, there’s a heavy moment towards the film’s conclusion that will undoubtedly become a highly discussed topic. Toei Animation The moment is one of the franchise’s most unexpected and hard-hitting, with ramifications that aren’t able to be (fully) explored — but it does follow up with something that leaves the door open for more Digimon. Of course, there isn’t necessarily any other Digimon follow up project in the works and many expected this to be the end, the final moments are a reminder that with Digimon, anything remains possible to some extent. The magic of Digimon Over the course of its two-decade existence, Digimon is something that many millennials have grown up with — so seeing it start with a youthful narrative that evolved into a much more mature tale was a rare achievement. Individually, each character, each thematic attribute and every contribution to the film are poignant on their own, but as a whole, it creates a film that strongly represents the power of anime. Soon enough, Digimon will be rebooted by Toei with the original DigiDestined, but living through this particular moment of time where Digimon has come full-circle has been a one of a kind experience.
